1Course Introduction: Rock Design
With great pleasure, I introduce this project guide. Whether you are a home school mom like me, or just an avid craft-er looking for projects, you'll find something to enjoy. Rock design was a fun activity for me, and I am excited to share it with others.
-
2Introduction to Stenciling
This video shows the design that I chose. I used a stencil sheet rather than drawing free hand. You have the option to use something like a marker instead for darker impressions.
-
3Selecting Your Rock
Maybe the most important decision in the whole project is the rock selection. Just as with a canvas selection, your masterpiece is bounded by this choice. Choose with your design vision and fun in mind.
-
4Introduction to Rock Painting
A major decision is choosing whether you will house your project indoors or outside. This choice determines the type of paint you will select.
-
5Painting Your Rock
It's all about materials from brushes to a stick to prop up your rock for drying. You will want to be prepared with your work space and your tools. You may also want to prepare for easy cleanup.
-
6Design Transfer: Line, Fish, and Water
The separator line to represent the horizon goes onto the rock with pencil. Both fish and the island mound are penciled in on the rock. Waves of water are transferred as well.
-
7Design Transfer: Sailboat, Tree, Crab, and Sun
Elements including the sailboat, palm tree, crab, and sun are mapped onto the rock. Design modifications and free-hand decisions are discussed in more detail.
-
8Introduction to Scene Painting
This most fun part of the rock design process brings your project to life. A review of the best materials is provided. Also, there are no mistakes when it comes to creative projects like this one.
-
9Scene Painting 01
In this video, we paint the fish. The first fish is a clown fish. The second is a bright yellow fish. Fine brushes and detailed work is demonstrated.

Sun, tree, mound, and sailboat are completed in this video. Color mixing is discussed and demonstrated.
-
11Scene Painting 03
Water, sky, and the infamous crab are completed in this video. Challenges with changing the sizing of stencil objects is discussed. Use of different materials, like a Q-tip are demonstrated. "Hopefully, he doesn't look too funny."
