Conductors & Insulators

Understanding Conductors & insulators is a key building block in comprehending how all of the main electrical power equipments are designed and operated.

This course explains the differences between conductors and insulators, and shows the common materials used in the electrical power industry.

We then look at some of the issues that designers face when using conductors and insulators, including how electrical clearances work and how tracking related problems are resolved.

Circuit breakers are vital to the electrical power network and allow us to operate it in a safe and flexible manner.

In this lecture we look in detail at how they operate and see how the circuit breaker types change as the voltage and currents increase.

We then introduce the idea of electrical discrimination and how circuit breakers are formed into a network that is flexible and responsive to electrical faults.

Electrical cables are used to take electricity from the source to the load.

In this lecture we look at how electrical cables are designed, constructed and installed.

Overhead Lines

Overhead lines take bulk power from the source to the load centers, often over many hundreds of kilometers.

In this lecture we look at how the overhead lines are designed to take into account electrical clearances and go through all of the basic elements of transmission systems.

We then go on to look at the different tower types before examining the insulators and conductors that go into a typical transmission tower.

Transformers

Transformers are a key element in the electrical power network.

In this lecture we introduce the basic theories associated with transformers and how we calculate the input and output voltages that are generated by the transformer using the transformer turns ratio.

We finish by showing some examples of how a transformer is used in the electrical power network
